Walnut Grove volleyball opened its first Class 6A season with a perfect run at the Duncanville Tournament of Champions, going 6-0 without dropping a set on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The Wildcats' dominant weekend marked a strong start to the program's first 6A campaign. Walnut Grove won at least three district titles across UIL standings-based sports last year and claimed the 2025-26 Lone Star Cup for Class 5A, the award recognizing the state's top-performing school in athletics, academics and fine arts.

The school announced the championship on X, calling the undefeated weekend "#TheStandard."

Now in District 6-6A alongside Allen, McKinney, McKinney Boyd, Princeton, Prosper and Prosper Rock Hill, the Wildcats face a significant step up in competition. Allen won the district volleyball title last season, along with five other district championships across football, boys basketball, baseball, softball and team tennis. Star Local Media noted in July that Walnut Grove's arrival makes Allen's path to repeat "a bit trickier."

The perfect start didn't last long.

Two days after the tournament, on Monday, Aug. 17, Southlake Carroll defeated Walnut Grove in five sets, as DFW Inside High School Sports reported on X.

Still, six straight wins and zero sets surrendered against a tournament field is a statement for a program adjusting to bigger-school competition. The UIL's biennial realignment pushed Walnut Grove into 6A based on higher enrollment, joining Prosper ISD neighbors Prosper High and Rock Hill in the same district for the first time.

District 6-6A play begins later this fall. The Wildcats' next scheduled match had not been announced as of Wednesday, Aug. 19.
