A 32-year-old Frisco man died after his SUV ran off the road and became submerged in water in Celina's Mustang Lakes subdivision on Friday, Feb. 6, according to a city of Celina alert published Tuesday, Aug. 11. That disclosure came more than six months after the crash.

The city hasn't said why.

The Celina Police Department and Celina Fire Department were dispatched at 4:07 p.m. to the 2900 block of Harkaway Court near Barbaro Street after receiving a report of a 2020 Lexus SUV submerged in water. Police and fire crews extracted the driver from the vehicle and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The department said the investigation remains ongoing and declined to release further details, including the driver's name and the cause of the crash. The department expressed condolences to the family and friends affected.

The specific body of water where the vehicle became submerged has not been identified publicly. No cause of the crash — whether speed, impairment, a medical event or road conditions — has been released by Celina police.

The fatal crash is one of two serious Celina traffic incidents disclosed in city alerts the same week. A separate vehicle-pedestrian crash on Preston Road (S.H. 289) on Wednesday, Feb. 18 also resulted in critical injuries and remains under investigation, according to the city's alerts.

Celina, which the U.S. Census Bureau has ranked as the fastest-growing city in America among cities with populations over 20,000, has grown from roughly 6,000 residents in 2010 to approximately 64,000. The Celina Fire Department told the city council in June that it plans to hire nine additional firefighters in fiscal year 2026-27 to move engine crews from three to four members, a change Fire Chief Shawn White said would help "save lives and property."
