Walnut Grove's tennis team edged Prosper High 10-9 on Wednesday, Sept. 23, winning the intra-district rivalry match in the final contest of the day.

The one-point margin came down to the day's last match between the two Prosper ISD programs. The official Walnut Grove High School account on X called the result a nail-biter, saying the Wildcats pulled out the win in the closing contest. The school's post did not include individual singles or doubles results.

The victory is the latest marker in a breakout stretch for Walnut Grove athletics. The Wildcats captured the 2025-26 Conference 5A UIL Lone Star Cup with 112 points, a feat accomplished in just the school's third year of UIL competition, according to a Prosper ISD newsletter. The school posted in August that MaxPreps ranked Walnut Grove the No. 4 overall athletic program in Texas regardless of classification.

Walnut Grove competes in Conference 5A, while Prosper High plays in the larger District 6A classification. Both are Prosper ISD schools, and the Sept. 23 meeting marked the first head-to-head of the fall tennis season between the two programs.

For Prosper, the loss is another test in a competitive district season. Head coach Curtis Martin and assistant coach Brandon Womack have guided the Eagles through a demanding early schedule. Prosper opened District 6A play with a loss to an undefeated Allen team on Aug. 18, when court temperatures hit 115 degrees.

After that Allen match, Martin told Eagle Nation Online, "We played a tough opponent … We played hard, and the scoreboard doesn't reflect our efforts."

Senior team captain Samanvi Veligeti, who plays line 2 singles for the Eagles, struck a similar tone in the same Eagle Nation Online report. She said the team needed to improve on fundamentals before setting its sights on state.

Walnut Grove opened its own district schedule against McKinney on Aug. 18. Both squads have been grinding through fall matches since, and the 10-9 scoreline suggests the Prosper ISD rivalry is tighter than the Wildcats' statewide accolades might indicate.

District play continues for both programs as the fall season pushes toward the UIL postseason.
