Prosper drivers who use First Street will need to find another way across the railroad tracks on Friday, Sept. 4.

The Town of Prosper announced on X that First Street will be closed at the railroad crossing from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. that day. BNSF Railway is relocating the railroad signal at the crossing during that 12-hour window.

The town asked drivers to use alternate routes and allow extra travel time. The advisory did not name specific detour streets. It also did not say how many blocks of First Street would be shut down or which cross-streets mark the boundaries of the closure.

Second railroad closure in two months

Friday's shutdown is the second time BNSF has closed part of First Street near the tracks since August. The railroad closed First Street between Mike Howard Lane and Coleman Street from Monday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 6, to install new crossing panels.

That earlier closure covered a specific stretch of road and a different type of work. Friday's advisory describes the job only as a signal relocation, without further detail on what the work involves.

Drivers who want to check conditions at the crossing before heading out can use the town's live camera feed of the First Street railroad crossing.

Closure overlaps $27.3M widening project

The crossing work comes as First Street is in the middle of a major widening project. The town is converting the road from a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane divided suburban roadway between Dallas North Tollway and Coleman Street. Construction began in May, according to Community Impact. The project carries a $27.3 million price tag, funded by the town, and is expected to finish in fall 2027.

Between the widening project and repeated railroad work, First Street drivers should expect continued disruptions through next year.

Friday's closure is scheduled as a single-day event. No follow-up work dates have been announced.
