The Celina Bobcats put their perfect season on the line Friday, Oct. 16, when they host Frisco in a District 4-5A Division II game that could shape the title race.
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Bobcat Field.
Celina enters at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in district play, sitting second behind Anna (7-0, 5-0) in the district standings. Frisco is 4-2 overall and 3-1 in district, making this a matchup between the second- and third-place teams with four weeks left in the regular season.
The Bobcats won district championships in four of their final five seasons competing in Class 4A, according to the Celina Record. This is their inaugural year in 5A Division II, and first-year head coach Marc Bindel has them unbeaten through six games.
Bindel came to Celina from Wichita Falls Memorial, where he went 16-7 in two seasons with two playoff berths, according to Sports Illustrated. He brought 99 career wins and 16 consecutive playoff appearances to a program that owns nine state titles, third most in UIL history.
"It is an honor to join the Bobcat Family and become part of a community with such a rich tradition of excellence," Bindel said when he was hired in March.
Celina has outscored opponents 237-96 this season, per MaxPreps. The Bobcats rolled Frisco Independence 70-0 on Oct. 8 for a season-high in points. One week earlier, they survived a 17-14 grinder against Frisco Emerson.
The range has defined Celina's year. The Bobcats opened with a 21-19 win over LSSS and a 35-34 win over Liberty Christian in nondistrict play. They then blew out Prosper Richland 46-15 and Frisco Panther Creek 48-14 in their first two district games.
The stakes extend beyond Oct. 16. Celina travels to Frisco Memorial on Oct. 23 before hosting Anna on Oct. 30 in what could be a de facto district championship game. Anna, ranked No. 6 in Dave Campbell's Texas Football and No. 20 in SI's state poll, is on a bye this week.
Celina has drawn statewide attention. The Bobcats debuted at No. 10 in Dave Campbell's Class 5A Division II rankings for Week 8, held steady at No. 16 in SI's state Top 25 and landed at No. 15 in the VYPE DFW combined rankings.
After the Anna showdown Oct. 30, Celina closes the regular season at Denison on Nov. 6.
