Prosper and Walnut Grove, two Prosper ISD schools with identical 7-1 records, meet for the first time Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
The No. 6-ranked Eagles head to Children's Health Stadium as the away team against the Wildcats, who moved up to Class 6A this fall after back-to-back district titles in 5A Division II. Both squads sit at 4-1 in district play, according to MaxPreps. Prosper holds second place; Walnut Grove is third.
It is the first regular-season football meeting between the two schools.
Prosper rolls in on a four-game winning streak. The Eagles routed McKinney Boyd 64-7 on Oct. 22 and have outscored opponents 420-247 this season. Their lone loss came Sept. 17 against Allen, 51-21.
Walnut Grove has won two straight, including a 49-14 victory over Princeton on Oct. 23, according to MaxPreps. The Wildcats' only loss is a 50-49 overtime defeat to Dallas Jesuit on Oct. 8. Walnut Grove has outscored opponents 361-165.
The matchup carries a personal edge for players who grew up together in Prosper's youth leagues before attendance boundaries split them into separate schools. In an August profile by Dave Campbell's Texas Football, Walnut Grove wide receiver Chase Jolley, whose brother Mason played linebacker at Prosper, captured the family stakes.
"I'm glad we get to play them (Prosper) this year," Jolley said. "Hopefully we beat them so I can talk to my brother about how we're better than Prosper. … He'll be at that game, too."
Prosper fans are promoting a "Ghost the Grove" blackout theme for the game. Eagles supporters are reminded they will be on the visitor side at Children's Health Stadium, the shared Prosper ISD facility.
Walnut Grove athletic director Tommy Allison, who has led the program since the school opened in 2023, compiled a 23-3 record in the Wildcats' first two varsity seasons, according to Dave Campbell's Texas Football. Walnut Grove also won the Class 5A Lone Star Cup for overall UIL achievement in sports, academics and fine arts.
After Friday's game, Prosper closes the regular season at home against Princeton on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. Walnut Grove travels to Allen on Thursday, Nov. 5.
