Celina is 5-0 for the fourth consecutive season after a 17-14 win over Frisco Emerson on Friday, Oct. 2, at Bobcat Field.

The Bobcats are 3-0 in District 4-5A Division II, trailing only Anna (4-0 in district, 6-0 overall) in the standings, according to MaxPreps. The nine-team district sends four teams to the playoffs, and the race for those spots is tightening at the midpoint of district play.

The win over Emerson did not come easily. Celina managed just 129 yards of total offense, the Frisco Enterprise reported. Senior Evan Koehne led the Bobcats with 75 rushing yards and a touchdown. The defense made the difference.

Senior Colton Crumpley intercepted a pass at the Emerson 30-yard line with 9:56 left in the fourth quarter. That turnover set up a 14-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Zane LaCrue to Walker Grubbs, giving Celina a 17-14 lead. The Bobcats then stuffed Emerson on fourth-and-two at the Celina 3-yard line with 1:07 remaining, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Head coach Marc Bindel, in his first season leading the nine-time state champion program, said the offense put the defense in tough spots all night. "To be able to make that stop was big time for our team and where we're at," he said.

Senior defensive back Lucas Engle returned an interception 57 yards in the second quarter to help erase an early 7-0 deficit. Celina had won 24 consecutive regular-season games entering the Emerson matchup.

Anna, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 5A Division II by Dave Campbell's Texas Football, has already beaten both Emerson and Panther Creek in district play. The Coyotes' running back Juelz Carter, a transfer from Cedar Hill, had 745 rushing yards and seven touchdowns through five games entering Week 6, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Below Celina and Anna, the standings are bunched. Frisco sits third at 2-1 in district. Emerson and Panther Creek are tied for fourth at 2-2. Prosper Richland dropped to 1-2 after a 27-7 loss to Panther Creek on Oct. 2.

Panther Creek junior quarterback Tristin Schramm completed 16-of-20 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns against Richland. Senior Shawn White added 170 rushing yards on 33 carries. Sophomore wide receiver Sukora Cooper Jr., a four-star SMU pledge, had 440 receiving yards through five games entering Week 6.

The Dallas Morning News described the district as a "tough" field where "one or two playoff-worthy teams" could be left out. With five teams at 2-1 or better and only four playoff spots, the second half of district play starts with little margin for error.
