A 4.7-mile stretch of FM 3286 and FM 546 between Lucas and Princeton could grow from two lanes to four, with room for an eventual six, under a TxDOT proposal now open for public comment.
The Texas Department of Transportation hosts an open-house meeting Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Southfork Ranch, 3700 Hogge Drive in Parker. Residents who can't attend in person can review materials online at keepitmovingdallas.com starting Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 5 p.m. and submit comments through Thursday, Sept. 10.
What TxDOT is proposing
The project would reconstruct the existing two-lane roadway into a four-lane divided road with curb, gutter and a raised median, according to TxDOT's official hearing notice. The design reserves space for an ultimate six-lane build-out. A continuous 10-foot-wide shared-use path would run along both sides of the corridor.
The work covers two segments: FM 3286 (East Lucas Road) from FM 1378 to FM 546/County Road 437, roughly 3.9 miles, and FM 546 from that junction to FM 982, about 0.8 miles.
TxDOT says the project would require additional right-of-way and could displace two residences and one commercial building. Relocation assistance is available. Construction would also affect wetlands and a floodplain.
No cost estimate or construction timeline has been released. The project remains in the environmental review and public input phase.
Collin County road network context
The FM 3286/FM 546 corridor sits in eastern Collin County, connecting FM 1378 near Lucas to FM 982 near Princeton. The widening is one of several TxDOT projects targeting two-lane farm-to-market roads across the county as population growth strains the existing network.
