Prosper High School’s HOSA chapter hopes to collect 100 blood donations Wednesday, Oct. 21, as it begins a districtwide competition with three other high schools.
The Carter BloodCare drive runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Gym 2. Students have until Tuesday, Oct. 20, to register. Organizers may accommodate students without appointments if they obtain a Minga pass, according to Eagle Nation Online.
The drive will contribute to Prosper’s total in the Blood Bowl, a competition among district HOSA chapters to collect the most donations throughout the school year. Prosper faces Rock Hill, Walnut Grove and Richland.
HOSA sponsor Ramona Gordon told the student newspaper the chapter’s goal is 100 donations at its first drive. Prosper High has hosted Carter BloodCare drives for more than a decade.
“We want to win the Blood Bowl,” Gordon said.
Donor requirements
Carter BloodCare accepts eligible donors beginning at age 16. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well and complete the blood center’s health screening. Those who are 16 must bring a signed parental consent form; donors 17 and older can donate without parental permission.
A photo ID is required. School IDs and driver’s licenses are among the accepted forms of identification, according to Carter BloodCare.
The blood center recommends getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of fluids and eating a healthy meal one to two hours before donating.
Student recognition
According to the school newspaper, eligible sophomore, junior and senior donors receive two volunteer hours. Seniors who donate twice during their senior year can earn a red graduation cord.
