Prosper and Celina residents can weigh in on where bike routes need safety upgrades across the Dallas District before a Friday, Nov. 6 deadline.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) opened an interactive online map on Oct. 13 as part of its Dallas District Bicycle Plan. The map lets residents review and comment on proposed bikeway functions for state roadways, Bicycle Tourism Trail refinements and priority corridors.

Four cyclists have been killed in North Texas crashes since December 2025, and more than two dozen have died statewide in the past nine months, WFAA reported Oct. 17.

Michael Gacki, a cyclist who lives in Celina and has ridden at a high level for 38 years, told the Denton Record-Chronicle that drivers have come within inches of him on local roads. "I've had people buzz me, you know, come within six inches of me on Coit [Road] here in Celina," Gacki said.

Gacki spoke after the April 16 death of Dory Selinger, a 54-year-old Paralympic medalist struck and killed by a vehicle in McKinney near Alma Drive and State Highway 121, according to the Dallas Express. Selinger won gold in track cycling at the 1996 Paralympics and three more medals in Sydney in 2000.

Phil Balli was killed during a weekly group ride in Richardson. A ghost bike now marks the spot at Custer and Renner roads. The driver who struck Balli has been indicted on a charge of criminally negligent homicide, and the case is being set for trial, Richardson police told WFAA.

In December 2025, Frisco Triathlon Club members Scott Mages and Andre Kocher were struck and killed on FM 455 East near Pilot Point during a group ride, NBC 5 reported.

The deaths have fueled advocacy. Dawna Diamond Brothers, founder of the Due Diligence Collective, started the group after Mages and Kocher were killed. Members of the Frisco Triathlon Club met with state Rep. Jared Patterson at his Frisco office to discuss proposals including a minimum three-foot passing clearance for motorists and expanded bike paths, NBC 5 reported.

Statewide, 852 cyclists and pedestrians were killed in crashes on Texas roads in 2024, accounting for more than 20 percent of all traffic fatalities, according to TxDOT. Cyclist deaths in Texas have more than doubled in the past decade, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported.

Celina and Prosper have also acted on cycling safety locally. Celina City Council passed e-bike registration rules at a March 10 meeting, driven by safety concerns about juveniles on e-bikes and e-motorcycles, Community Impact reported. The ordinance was modeled after rules Prosper Town Council adopted in October 2025.

TxDOT said the Dallas District Bicycle Plan will help identify gaps and prioritize locations where bikeway improvements could provide the greatest benefit. A full draft plan is expected for public review next year.

The online feedback process takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Residents who need translation or disability accommodations should contact TxDOT at 214-535-7261 at least five business days before the deadline.
